A Prescription of Common Sense

Thomas Jefferson once said... "Common sense is the foundation of all authorities, of the laws themselves and of their construction."
If Thomas Jefferson is correct in his assertion then the present condition of Canada's foundation is shattered and crumbling. We have work to do!
Common sense is not so common anymore around the decision making tables at the highest levels of leadership in the House of Commons, Ottawa.
Let's look at some indicators that cause me to believe and say this is so.
Immigration:
Currently our system is experiencing population growth of close to 3% with 96% of that from immigration. Many from countries that lack a system where these people can be vetted properly. This is one of the contributing factors to the worst housing shortage and chaos on our streets that this nation has ever seen. It is unsustainable and must be corrected.
Common sense would roll this back to a system we had in place for many years that controlled immigration with prudence. It must be tied to available jobs, housing and healthcare.
Taxation:
It seems every day we as Canadians are faced with a new or increasing tax on something. Carbon tax, capital gains tax, corporate tax, personal tax all going in the wrong direction. The latest from our environment minister is a proposed carbon tax on international shipping that would be given to poorer countries to fight climate change.
Common sense says you cannot alter the climate with government tax. Only through science, innovation and technology can we make this planet better. More tax is a burden on every citizen and I have to say this... unless you are a weasel on the receiving end siphoning off to fill your own pocket!
Government Accountability and Transparency:
Our current model seems to be, get what you can, make your friends and family wealthy, all from the public chequebook. Void of accountability and transparency. Lie, cheat, cover-up, swindle, rinse and repeat. It is gut wrenching to watch what should be trusted officials act not with the best intentions of Canada but rather for their own treasuries and foreign actors.
Common sense says, hold them accountable, clean this mess up once and for all. Every dollar spent should be invested into Canada to build this nation or for very legitimate humanitarian needs. We need a PM, Cabinet ministers and caucus members in Ottawa that love this nation and would lay down their life and treasure for it. Seems we are currently far to the opposite end of this spectrum at the moment!
Our Natural Resources:
What we are seeing at present is NOT the way to bring prosperity to a nation.
Blocking pipeline construction
Bogging down permits for mining, drilling and major development initiatives.
Imposing emission caps on Canada's oil and gas industry which is currently the cleanest and most environmentally responsible on planet earth.
All the while taxing and regulating these primary industries to the breaking point, driving investment south of the border and to other countries around the world.
In the last several years alone half a trillion investment dollars has been lost because of this lunacy.
Common sense says, cut the regulations, cut the taxes, remove the barriers.
Nurture these industries so they can thrive, bringing home powerful pay cheques, raising the standard of living for all Canadians.
We could talk about many more issues facing this nation and we will as time moves along.
Will this be an easy job? Absolutely not. Foundation work is very hard work.
However if we love this nation and want it to stand tall and strong on the world stage it must be done. Common sense must be restored to the decision making process. The current common sense deficient leaders who seems far removed from everyday life and reality must go. It is high time for new leadership in Ottawa who will cast a new vision, rebuild the foundations and bring common sense once again back to government.
